SSWA DC was founded in 2013 by a small group of dedicated school social workers. In January 2017, the group received state affiliation with the School Social Work Association of America (SSWAA).

Our membership is diverse; we represent DCPS and Public Charter School professionals who are in elementary, middle, high, and alternative school settings, in all quadrants of the District. We also welcome those who teach social work and those who have retired from practice within the school setting.

SSWA DC Purpose

To promote communication within the profession, with members of the Association, other educational disciplines, and private and public organizations interested in the welfare of students in the District of Columbia.

To provide a forum for the exchange of ideas, information and skills among members.

To assume an active role in communicating the role of the school social worker to others and enlisting their cooperation in working toward improved services.

To promote the effective use of school social work services for students and their families throughout the District.

To provide a vehicle for social policy change through community legislative efforts.

To ensure that the highest standards of professional school social work practices are upheld.

To provide continuing education opportunities for school social workers and other human service professionals.

To recognize significant contributions to the field of school social work in Washington, DC, to include awarding the DC School Social Worker of the Year award on an annual basis.

SSWA DC believes school social workers in DC are a valued part of the education of all children, connecting schools, families, and communities to support student well-being and success.
